We left Carthage and headed straight for Nauvoo. Sometimes, I wish we had a full two weeks to make this trip. It's so hard to rush from palce to place. But thank goodness for Grandma's games and entertainment!!
We made it to Nauvoo in the ealry evening. Most places were closed, but they were getting ready for their nightime variety show. While we waited for that, we were able to walk the museum there.
Once done at the museum, we walked up to the area that they did their variety show. It was basically the missionaries doing songs and dance. I can't believe how much thye moved! It was so hot and humid, the last thing I'd want to do is dance!
One of the songs they sang was, "Grandma's Feather Bed." My kids were shocked that I knew all the words. It was a Taylor staple as we sang across the mid-west when visiting family.
We came back the next morning ready for sights! However, so much rain!!! We were really bummed we didn't have better weather, but we weren't going to let it stop us. The first part of the day was us doing all the little activities. Then we drove the roads in the motorhome. Stopping to get out when neccessary. We loved walking the old homes and hearing the stories.
One home that was special to me was The Benjamin Freeman Bird home. It also was the Browning home, who were gunsmiths. Benjamin Feeman Bird was my 4th great-grandfather. He helped build Nauvoo. He also helped move the saints west. He was asked to stay in Council Bluffs, IA, and help get the saints prepared who were headed west.
We ended the day with a sunset walk down The Trail of Hope. It was the path taken by the pioneers as they were leaving the beautiful place they helped build. The temple was in sight the whole walk, resting in the background. It was a reflective time for us as we walked toward the Mississippi river. We had a nice family chat, and shared experiences. We shared what we learned, and insights we gained.
