Making Lemonade Out of Lemons

Since my daughter has to learn such big words, I have decided to pursue this as well. I plan on learning a new word every day. I plan to use it at least once that day. I might as well make the most of it.

Today I have five! They all come from her own vocabulary words. Remember these are 1st graders! We should know and use these words.

ebony- of a black color

haughty- behaving in a superior, or arrogant way

envy- the unhappy feeling of wanting somebody's success, qualities, or possessions

bodice- a kind of vest worn over a dress or a blouse and laced up the front

bier- a kind of table on which to lay a dead person

Joyful Learning!!!

What the? Did the teacher forget that she is teaching 1st grade? Have you talked to any other moms that think this is nuts? Maybe you should approach the teacher soon or she'll start teaching them algebra. I'm all for challenging the kids but this seems a little over the top.

I think you should use them all in a sentence. One sentence.

And WTFudge is "bier"? I mean, I see your definition there and everything, but still. How many times has that come up in casual conversations of adults, let alone 1st graders?

All of these words are from the fairy tale, Snow White. Every week they have a new story with a new set of vobaulary words to learn. I understand them needing to know the meaning of words they don't know, but the definitions are just as confusing to a first grader.

Taryn- I have talked to other moms and they think they are a little over the top as well. I'm still in limbo of putting Grace back at the neighborhood school. We'll see.

Brittany- this is my sentence:

The haughty woman was full of envy, she wanted the ebony bodice of the corpse lying on the bier.

(I don't even know how to pronouce bier)

I was going to wish you luck in using bier in a sentence, only to read that you already have! I'm impressed! Way to make lemonade! :)

That is insane! Does it stress Grace out,if it doesn't then I would worry too much. But I do agree the words are over the top- who wants their first grade child to know what a bier is? "Excuse me ma'am. is that your husband laying on the bier?" I think anyone hearing a child use those words would be slightly concerned!

Wow, that's crazy! Good job with your sentence!

You know it's over-the-top when a first grader has a vocab word most people haven't even heard of! (maybe you had) Bier is the one I'm referring to. I'm sure your example of making lemonade out of this situation is teaching Grace far more important lessons than those definitions. So, kudos to you!!! I'm sure the Lord will let you know where the best place is for her to receive her education. :)

Here is a sample of Tanner's spelling words this week (1st grade also) middle, fiddle, wiggle, giggle, puddle, cuddle. I realize that Gracie's are vocab, but still that is crazy.
